Mikhail Vasilyevich Nesterov (31 May 1862 – 18 October 1942)

Mikhail Nesterov, Vision of Youth Bartholomew 1889-1890.

The story is taken from the book "The Life of St. Sergius" written by his 
disciple Epiphanius the Wise.
The image of Sergius Radozhenskiy (in the world Bartholomew, rus. 
Varfolomei) was for Nesterov the embodiment of morality.
The painting became a sensation, and Nesterov himself considered 
it his best work until the end of his days.

In 1901, Nesterov went on a trip to the Solovetsky monastery (Arkhangelsk 
region). Impressed by the North, its rugged nature and the Slovetsky 
monks, he painted several pictures, one of which was Silence.
